Field, Auburn: The crowd of 1187 expected a rematch of the 1985 NFA Championship
game, but what transpired was a mismtach, not a rematch. Following a short
punt the Panthers moved 55 yards, all on the ground, to take the lead
behind Malo Roe's one yard run. The conversion was missed for a 6-0 lead.
Moments
later Panther LB Charles Swillie picked up a Rickey Greene fumble and
scampered 27 yards to set up an eventual Pat O'Grady field goal and a
10-0 lead. The Panthers would put the game out of reach after the Stars
next possession when punt returner extraordinaire Harry Washington found
a seam and went 76 yards untouched for the score. O'Grady's PAT brought
the score to 16-0.
In the
second period, O'Grady tallied again, this time on a 38 yard field goal.
The Panthers would score two more times before the half as RB Darryl Baines
carried in from 2 yards out and O'Grady connected on a 34 yard field goal.
The halftime score stood 29-0.
The Stars
were unable to generate any offensive output during the entire game as
Panther DEs Brian Thompson and David Grimes collected 2 sacks each and
DB Jerry Kaiser batted away numerous pass attempts. The Panthers on the
the other hand could do no wrong. Craig Maley came in to relieve QB Roy
Medley and competed all five of his passes for 55 yards and 2 more TDs.
The first was a 12 yard effort to WR Will Calvin and the final tally was
a one yard toss to TE Kevin Graden. O'Grady hit both PAT's.
