..EVERETT - The Auburn Panthers broke a Northwest Football Alliance winning record in record-breaking fashion Saturday night with an 85-6 victory over the Snohornish Blue Knights.
…..The one-sided pounding was the 33rd consecutive win over three seasons for Auburn, breaking the old NFA record of 32 straight wins by the former Pierce County Bengals. The Panthers have never lost a game since forming their amateur men's team in 1984.
…..En route, the Panthers set single-game records for most points (85), .biggest winning margin (79) and most points for combined teams (91).
…..The Panthers' offense scored touchdowns on 12 of its 15 possessions in the contest, while the defense contributed a punt-return touchdown, a safety and excellent field position for the offense.
…..Auburn continues to lead the NFA with a 5-0 record, while Snohomish slipped to 1-4. The Panthers host the 1-4 Seattle Cavaliers this Saturday at Troy Field.
…..The game was tied at 6-6 after Snohomish scored on a blocked punt return in the first quarter. But the Panthers' succeeded to score the next 79 points, including a 34-point eruption in the third quarter.
…..Auburn wide receiver Harry Washington caught three
touchdown passes of 4, 75 and 22 yards and finished the game with four receptions for 132 yards.
Running back Steve Kaiser rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns in nine carries, while Malo Roe had two touchdowns and 48 yards in six carries.
…..Auburn held out starting quarterback Roy Medley, who is still recovering from a slight separation of his left shoulder. Back-up Craig Maley threw for three touchdowns while going 5 of 10 for 176 yards.
…..The Panthers scored on their opening series, with Maley hitting Washington for a 31-yard pass on the first play and then again on a 4 yarder for the touchdown.
…..Snohomish tied the game when Randy Head scooped up a blocked punt and returned it 21 yards for the first touchdown to be scored on Auburn since the Panthers' season opener.
…..But Auburn wasted little time regaining the lead as Maley hit Washington on a 75-yard touchdown on the next play from scrimmage.
…..Auburn added three more touch- downs in the first half on drives of 28, 37 and 55 yards. Then, on the final play of the half, defensive back Tony Bartenetti picked up a partially-deflected Snohomish punt and returned it 32 yards for another touchdown as time expired.
…..Snohomish fumbled the kickoff to open the second half, with Auburn recovering at the Blue Knights' 22. From there, it took just one play again as Maley hit Washington for their third touchdown pass.
…..The score enlarged to 52-6 midway through the third period, but Auburn's defense continued to give the Panther offense golden opportunities to score.
…..Defensive lineman David Grimes intercepted a screen pass at the Snohomish 3 to set up the next touchdown. The Blue Knights then failed on a fake punt attempt at their 25 to set up an eventual 14-yard flanker reverse touchdown by Otis Embree.
…..Linebacker Trent Hockett recovered a fumble at the 14 to set up a one-play scoring drive on a run by James Archie. John Tresch intercepted on the next series and Auburn scored again on one play, this time a 34-yard run by-Kaiser.
…..Snohomish tried another fake punt late in the game, with Tom Roselli intercepting at the Blue Knights' 11. This, time Auburn needed two plays, with Maio Roe running for his second touchdown of the game from 13 yards out.
…..Auburn totaled 448 yards of offense while limiting Snohomish to 48 yards and three first downs. The Panthers also forced five interceptions and recovered two Snohomish fumbles.
