| 110) Behind the block
of LG Jason Mackintosh, EJ Ash swept around the left end and down
the sideline for 18 yards before stepping out at the 14. |
  |
| 113) On 1st
and goal from the 3, Chris Dixon hit TE Syii Tucker at the goal line
to put the Hawks on the board. |
The Eastside Hawks overcame
a three week layoff to win the North American Football League Western Division
Championship and move on to the NAFL National Championship to be played
November 13th at Disney World in Orlando, Florida.
Disaster nearly struck the Rifles on the opening kickoff as #3 was stripped
by Derrick Smith. Alex Maldonado recovered for the Rifles at the 28. Two
Mike Mayfield runs netted 4 yards and then QB Brett Mitchell tried to connect
with WR Landon Rose on a quick slant but threw the ball slightly behind
him and it went incomplete. The Rifle punt was partially blocked by Antonio
Chandler and bounced out of bounds just across midfield.
The Hawks went right to work with RB EJ Ash gaining 4 yards on first down,
and QB Chris Dixon throwing a deep out to WR Brian Carter for 16 more. Three
consecutive runs by Ash gained 18, 9 and 2 yards, setting up first and goal
from the 3. Dixon hit TE Syii Tucker at that goal line for the score.
|
| . |
 |
| 115) Mike Mayfield swept
around left end for 4 yards. |

 |
| 116) QB Brett
Mitchell spun out of the grasp of DE Jackie Triplett and then rolled
right and found Otis Brown open down the middle for an 18 yard gain. |
A 28 yard return straight
up the middle by #3 gave the Rifles a first and 10 at their own 36. Mayfield
took a toss around right end for 4 yards. Mitchell dropped back and barely
avoided DE Jackie Triplett, then rolled to his right and found Otis Brown
open down the middle for 18 yards. A quick hitch to Mike Burris gained
4 more, and then on a sweep left, DB Joel Robnett met the much larger
Mayfield behind the line of scrimmage. Robnett got the worst of the collision
but still managed to bring Mayfield down for a loss of a yard. A dropped
pass on 3rd down forced the Rifle punt team back on the field. Hawk returner
Terrance Ivory fielded the punt at the 10 and returned it out to the 24
before being caught from behind in traffic.
 |
| 120) Terrance
Ivory side-stepped this would be tackler on his 14 yard punt return. |
|
| |
 |
| 121) OG Chris Johnson
drove a Rifle defender deep into the secondary allowing EJ Ash to
cut back and head up the sideline for a 41 yard gain. |
 |
| 125) Dixon
hit Mikal Akbar down the middle for a 33 yard gain that set up 1 and
goal at the 2. |
Starting from their own
24, the Hawk offense went right to work. Dixon dropped back to pass on first
down and then handed to Ash on the draw. Ash went up the middle untouched,
cut back behind the block of Chris Johnson and was off to the races. DB
Michael Guidry saved the TD by catching Ash from behind at the Rifle 35.
Two plays later Dixon found a wide open Antonio Chandler streaking down
the right sideline behind the Rifle secondary. Dixon hit him inside the
5, but the ball was slightly underthrown forcing Chandler to reach back
for it, and the ball came out as he hit the ground. No matter, Dixon's offensive
line was giving him so much time that the game may have seemed like a 7-on-7
passing drill. On the very next play Dixon stood tall in and threw a 33
yard strike down the middle to WR Mikal Akbar. Guidry again saved the TD,
stopping Akbar at the 2. |
| |
 |
| 126) Fullbacks Greg Paribello
(left) and Paul Snow (right) allowed EJ Ash (#8 center) to literally
jog into the endzone from 2 yards out - but the play was nullified
by a penalty. |
  |
| 128) QB Chris
Dixon takes off on a 10 yard scramble up the middle. |
Ash swept left and coasted
into the endzone behind his fullbacks on the very next play, but the score
was nullified by a holding penalty. On 1st down from the 12, Ash cut back
into one of his linemen and was stopped for no gain by Michael Fox and Rod
Picket. On 2nd and goal from the 12, Chris Dixon dropped back to pass but
couldn't find an open receiver so he tucked the ball and took off. He ran
through the tackle of DT Warren Cliff, juked MLB Barry Howard at the 8 but
ran right into the grasp of LB Rod Pickett at the 5. He was able to spin
out and power his way back to the 2 yard line before Pickett could drag
him down. |
| |
  |
| 130) QB Chris Dixon was
initially stopped on this 4th down QB sneak but was able to slide
to his left behind his linemen and push across the goal line. |
The Hawks tried Ash off
left tackle again but Pickett stopped him at the 1. On 4th down from the
1 the Hawks tried a QB sneak. Noseguard Chris Warren, along with linebackers
Rod Pickett (#52) and Anthony Teal (#54), did not give an inch to the Hawks
interior line, but Dixon was able to slide to down the line to his left
where he found a crack and bulled his way just over the goal line. Craig
Hawley's PAT put the Hawks up 14-0 with 2:02 left in the first quarter. |
| . |
 |
| 133) MLB Aaron Wardrip
deflected this pass away from intended receiver Otis Brown. |
 |
| 134) Reggie
Hargrove just missed getting a sack. |
Hawley boomed the ensuing
kickoff 3 yards deep into the endzone where it was taken for a touchback.
Mayfield could only gain a yard off right tackle before being stopped by
Mark Riley and Kaelon Kurp. On 2nd down Mitchell had plenty of time to throw
and sent a bullet down the middle but MLB Aaron Wardrip was there to knock
the ball away. With DE Reggie Hargrove breathing down his neck, Mitchell's
3rd down pass was incomplete. The Rifles boomed a 38 yard punt that was
muffed by the Hawk return man but special teams ace Derrick Smith was there
to recover for the Hawks at their own 41. |
| .2ND
QUARTER |
  |
| 136) Chris Dixon fired
a stirke deep down the middle to Josh Brranch but the ball was just
out of reach |
 |
| 204) Center
Josh Ketzenburg springs Ash for a 28 yard gain. |
The Hawks immediately
went for the quick strike. Dixon faked the handoff to Ash and bootlegged
to left which gave him plenty of time to set his feet and throw deep down
the middle to Josh Branch streaking behind the Rifle secondary. The throw
was a bit long and went off Branch's fingertips at the Rifle 25. The first
quarter ended with Ash sweeping right for 3 yards before receiving a violent
hit courtesy of DB Willie Parks. The short run put Ash's totals at 8 carries
for 78 yards. On the first play of the 2nd quarter, Dixon threw a deep
out to Brian Carter. The defender arrived early and was hit with a 21
yard pass-interference penalty, giving the Hawks a first down at the Rifle
38. Ash was

| 208) Ramon Bates and
Anthony Teal forced Dixon to scramble for a 5 yard gain. |
wrapped up in the
backfield for a 5 yard loss by MLB Barry Howard on 1st down. Two plays
later, on 3rd and 15, he went untouched up the through the line and then
beat the defense to the corner. A wicked stiff-arm laid out one defender
before he was stopped by two others. The 28 yard run put him over 100
for the game. The Rifle defense stepped up with LB Anthony Teal spiinning
Ash backwards on first down. Teal didn't make the tackle but delayed Ash
long enough for Shem Johnson, Mickey Beagle and Rod Pickett for stop Ash
for a 2 yard loss. Pressure from Michael Fox, Ramon Bates and Anthony
Teal forced Dixon to scramble for short gains on 2nd and 3rd down. Craig
Hawley came on to attempt a 34 yard field goal but the snap was a bit
low. Holder Derrick Smith got a hold of the ball and took off but was
immediately underbut by Shem Johnson. As he was going down, Smith did
a no-look pitch back to Hawley, who rolled left with Johnson in his face,
and threw a one-hop pass to Kevin Prosser.
|
| |
 |
| 212) Mike Mayfield up
the middle for 8 yards. |
 |
| 213) MLB Aaron
Wardrip catches Mayfield in the backfield. |
Taking over at their
own 16 with 11:10 remaining in the first half, the Rifles went to work.
Mike Mayfield ripped off runs of 5 and 8 yards right through the heart of
the Hawk defense. A 3rd attempt was stuffed for no gain by MLB Aaron Wardrip
and DT Reggie Hargrove. On 2nd and 10, Mitchell hit TE Mike Burris across
the middle for 13 yards and another first down. Morris Cannon swept right
but was nailed for a 3 yard loss by LB Mark Riley and CB Terrance Ivory.
Mitchell went to Marcus London on the quick out but the DB Joel Robnett
was there to knock the ball away. Robnett was called for pass-interference.
It was only a 3 yard penalty but gave the Rifles an automatic first down.
The drive stalled from there and the Rifles were forced to punt from midfield
with 5:50 remaining inthe half. |
| |
 |
| 221) FB Greg Paribello
(left) and John Romero (right) spring EJ Ash (center) for an 18 yard
gain. |
  |
| 227) Chris
Dixon (right) had plenty of time to find Antonio Chandler open in
the end zone. |
The Hawk returner
muffed another punt but was able to cover it at the Hawk 10. Ash and Kevin
Prosser combined to rip off 4 consecutive runs of 18, 27, 9 and 21 yards,
moving the ball deep into Rifle territory. On the last run, Michael Guidry
caught Ash from behind at the 20 and knocked the ball loose but it bounced
out of bounds at the 16. Ash was stopped for no gain so the Hawks went
to the air, with Dixon finding Antonio Chandler in the endzone. Holder
Derrick Smith had to go way up to get a high snap, but was able to get
it down in time for Hawley to boot it through. A penalty nullified the
PAT moved the attempt back 10 yards, and this time the snap was behind
Smith and it was all he could do to just fall on the ball. With 1:53 left
in the half, Hawks 20 - Rifles 0.
|
| |
 |
| 230) Shem
Johnson, center, returned kick into Hawk territory before being caught
from behind by Kevin Prosser. |
  |
| 231) Misionare
Toilolo knocked the ball loose while sacking Mitchell. David White
(#33) recovered for the Rifles. |
Shem Johnson returned
the ensuing kickoff 45 yard through the heart of the Hawk coverage before
being brought down by Kevin Prosser. On first down from the Hawk 45, Mitchell
dropped back to pass but had to step up to avoid DE Jackie Triplett coming
from the backside. He moved right into the grasp
of LB Misionare Toilolo, who knocked the ball loose as he was bringing Mitchell
down.
 |

Rifles. More pressure
from Triplett forced an incompletion on 2nd down. Mitchell gained 8 yards
on a QB draw, and a 5-yard facemask penalty on the play brought up 3rd and
4. Mitchell overthrew Landon Rose, and the Hawks punt return team trotted
on the field. They were caught by surprise when the Rifle offense remained.
Mitchell threw a strike to an open receiver but he dropped the ball. In
the confusion, the Hawks had too many men on the field giving the Rifles
a first down at the Hawk 34. Another dropped pass brought up 2nd and 10.
Consecutive drops on the left caused Mitchell to throw to the right side.
CB Terrance Ivory jumped in front of the receiver and returned the ball
27 yards before being brought down by Mitchell. |
| |
  |
| 241) Chris Dixon once
again had plenty of time and found McCollum all alone in the endzone. |
 |
| Dixon bootlegged
and found TE Syii Tucker for the 2 pt. conversion. |
Dixon connected with
Brian Carter for 9 yards, and then scrambled for 12 and a first down.
Then, with 7 seconds left in the half, he connected with a WIDE open Jimmy
McCollum in the back corner of the endzone. They Hawks went for 2 and
Dixon faked the handoff to Ash and then rolled right and found Syii Tucker
for the conversion.
The Rifles got another
long kickoff return, this time 37 yards out near midfield by #3, but time
expired during the runback.

3RD
QUARTER
|
 |
| 303) Barry Howard tripped
up EJ Ash for a 2 yard loss. |
 |
| 304) Chris
Dixon slipped while trying to evade the rush of DE Michael Fox and
was downed for a sack. |
Jimmy McCollum returned
the 2nd half kickoff 27 yards out to the 37. EJ Ash gained 2 yards on first
down, but abruptly lost them on 2nd. On 3rd and 10, Dixon slipped while
trying to step up and avoid DE Michael Fox. Fox touched him down for a 9
yard loss. The punt snap short hopped to punter Jose Moreno and he had to
hurry to get off a high punt that was downed at the Hawk 48.
|
| . |
 |
| Mike Mayfield broke the
tackle of Mark Riley on his way to a 10 yard gain. |
  |
| 309 left)
Brett Mitchell was able to avoid Jeremiah Pharms but was blindsided
by Jackie Triplett. 310 right) Cedric Mars knocked away this 3rd down
pass intended for Landon Rose. |
Runs of 10 and 3 yards
by Mike Mayfield moved the ball down to the 35. On 2nd and 7, Mitchell stepped
up to avoid the of Jeremiah Pharms only to be caught from behind by Jackie
Triplett for
a 9 yard loss. On 3rd down, CB Cedric Mars stepped in front of Landon Rose
to knock away Mitchell's pass. A short Rifle punt was downed at the Hawk
22. |
| . |
 |
| 312) Barry Howard slipped
under the lineman to submarine Ash for a loss. |
  |
| 313) With
the only rusher within 5 yards getting knocked on his backside by
guard Jesse Duncan, Dixon had plenty of time to wait for Derrick Smith
to get behind the Rifle secondary for a 65 yard gain. |
The Hawk drive started
with MLB Barry Howard submarining Ash for a yard loss. On 2nd down, Dixon
dropped back and heaved one down the middle to WR Derrick Smith. Smith caught
the ball at the 32 and made it down to the 13 before being drug down from
behind by Guidry. Ash swept left for 6 yards but a personal foul on the
Hawks pushed them back out to the 22. Dixon hit Kevin Prosser for 8 yards,
bringing up 3rd and 11. Dixon dropped back and for what might have been
the first time all game, the Rifles defensive front put good pressure on
him. DT Larry Giles forced him to pull the ball down and run. Cliff Warren
got a hold of him at the 16, but a quick change of direction caused Warren
to lose his grip. Dixon ran through the tackle of Shem Johnson at the 13.
Barry Howard was closing quickly closing from behind, but he was taken out
by Willie Park's missed tackle at the 12. Dixon headed straight upfield
and submarined into the endzone under LBs Rod Pickett and Anthony Teal.
Dixon's 2nd rushing TD, combined with Hawley's PAT, put the Hawks up 35-0.
|
| . |
  |
| 322 left) Jackie Triplett's
quick swim move left the OT no choice but to grab jersey on this incomplete
pass. 326 right) Terrance Ivory nearly intercepted this overthrown
pass. |
 |
| 329) Mitchell
found Marcus London between 2 defenders from 36 yards out for the
Rifles only touchdown. |
A 23 yard return by Shem
Johnson started the Rifles at their own 33 with just over 5:00 remaining
in the 3rd quarter. Passes to Otis Brown, David White and Landon Rose covered
13, 4, and 16 yards, moving the Rifles down to the Hawk 34. Pressure from
DE Jackie Triplett caused back to back incompletions. On the latter play,
the OT tackled Triplett rather than let him get to Mitchell. Mitchell scrambled
down the left sideline for a 29 yard TD, but the last 19 yards were nullified
by a holding penalty. Three plays and three penalties later, Mitchell found
time to throw and hit Marcus London between two defenders from 36 yards
out to get the Rifles on the board with 1:35 remaining in the 3rd quarter. |
| . |
 |
| 332) EJ Ash gets outside
for 32 yards on the last play of the 3rd quarter. This run, his final
carry of the game, put his rushing total at 175 yards on 18 carries. |
  |
| 401) Chris
Dixon (right) rolled out and found Antonio Chandler (left) open in
the endzone. |
A short kickoff and 21
yard return by Terrance Ivory started the Hawks at their 45. The exchange
from Ash to Antonio Chandler on a reverse was mishandled and Chandler covered
the ball for a 9 yard loss. Ash swept left for 32 yards, giving the Hawks
a first down at the Rifle 32. On the first play of the 4th quarter, Dixon
rolled out and threw back down the middle to Antonio Chandler who was wide
open running a crossing route a yard deep in the endzone. Hawley's PAT put
the Hawks up 42-7. |
|
4TH
QUARTER
|
 |
| 404) Safety Milton Myers
intercepted a pass early in the 4th quarter to set up the Hawks final
points. |
 |
| 406) Kevin
Prosser leaps a would-be tackler on his way to an 8 yard gain. |
On the Rifles' 2nd play
from scrimmage, safety Milton Myers stepped in front of a Brett Mitchell
pass and returned the ball down to the 39 before being stopped by Otis Brown.
Kevin Prosser runs of 8 and 2 yards got 4 more downs for the Hawks. The
Hawks went with the option but MLB Barry Howard anticipated the pitch from
Dixon and nailed Brown for a 7 yard loss. On 3rd and 17 Dixon threw long
to Jimmy McCollum but Shem Johnson was there to knock the ball away. With
9:42 remaining in the game, Craig Hawley came on to boot a 49 yard field
goal that was good by 10 yards.
  |
| 412) Shem
Johnson nearly intercepted this long pass intended for Jimmy McCollum.
413) Craig Hawley's 49 yard FG had plenty of distance. |
|
| . |
 |
| 419) Landon
Rose couldn't come down with this pass in the endzone. |
 |
| 422) A hard
landing courtesy of LB Lavelle Bogan separated Mike Burris from the
ball on 4th and 3. |
Johnson's 31 yard
return set up the Rifle offense at their 41. Forced out of the pocket
by Cornelius Winesberry and Garland Bryant, Mitchell scrambled for 8 yards.
Two plays later Morris Cannon went up the middle for 11 yards and a first
down. Mitchell then hit Landon Rose down the middle for 24 yards, moving
the Rifles down to the 13. Mitchell just missed Rose in the endzone on
the next play. An 8 yard pass to Marcus London set up 3rd and 2 at the
5. The Rifles called on Morris Cannon up the middle but he was stuffed
for a loss by Jeremiah Pharms, Shay Dean and
Misionare Toilolo.
On 4th and 3 Mitchell hit Mike Burris in the back of the endzone but he
couldn't hold on as he landed, and the Rifles turned the ball over on
downs.
|
| . |
 |
| 426) Dixon barely had
time to throw the ball away due to pressure from Barry Howard and
Michael Fox. |
 |
| 428) Mitchell
scrambled away from Shay Dean and fired into the endzone, but the
ball was knocked away by LB Ted Wedell. |
Starting at their
own 6, the Hawks couldn't move the ball. Kevin Prosser was dropped for
a 4 yard loss by Barry Howard and Rod Pickett. Barry Howard blitzed on
3rd down forcing Dixon to roll right into the path of Michael Fox. Dixon
barely unloaded the ball before being hit. The Hawks ended up punting
from their own 2. #3 fielded the punt at the 35 and returned the ball
down to the 26. A facemask penalty on the return moved it down to the
13, and 2 incompletions later another penalty on the Hawks moved the ball
to the 4.
|
| . |
 |
| 430) MLB Aaron Wardrip
stuffs Mike Mayfield for a 2 yard loss. |
  |
| 432) On 3rd
and goal Mitchell (left) had great protection and found Marvin Mallory
(right) in the endzone, but CB Cedric Mars broke up the pass. |
Two runs by Mike Mayfield
netted a yard. On 3rd down Mitchell found Marvin Mallory in the endzone,
but the pass was broken up. Pressure by Shay Dean and Kirk Williams on
4th down forced Mitchell to misfire on 4th down and the Rifles turned
the ball over on downs again. Brett Mitchell threw 3 touchdown passes
in the 4th quarter, but his receivers didn't catch any of them. Not to
be outdone, the Rifle DBs dropped 3 easy interceptions during the 2nd
half.
|
| . |
 |
| 435) FB Tim Reese heads
up the middle. He kept his legs churning while several Rifle defenders
were more intent on stripping the ball than tackling him. |
Three runs by Tim
Reese netted 27 yards and then Chris Dixon took a knee to run out the
clock. Final score: Hawks 45 - Rifles 7.
The Hawks now travel
to Orlando, Florida, to play the Central Penn Piranha in the 2004
NAFL Championship Game on November 13.
