1998
Tournament a Huge Success!!!
|
|
...................................................................................................................
|
|
.....Eight
teams consisting of nearly 400 athletes and hundreds of
civilians were drawn to Cowan Stadium at Fort Lewis for
the NWFL's first preseason tournament.
.
.....Every
team was on the field in full uniform for the random drawing
to fill out the brackets. Seeing nearly 400 athletes on
the field simultaneously was quite the impressive sight!
.
.....Games
were 10 minutes each and full NWFL rule were in effect.
In the event of a tie, teams would square off in a Kansas
City tie breaker from the 10 yard line.

GAME
1: Clash of the Titans
Bengals 6 - Thunderbolts 0 (OT) |
.....The
other 6 teams breathed a collective sigh of relief as the two powerhouses
were randomly paired in the first game.
.....The
Bengals received the opening kickoff and ran 8 minutes off the clock
with a 13 play, 62 yard drive that ended with a muffed FG attempt.
The Bengals powerful rushing attack sustained the drive with 47
yards on 9 carries. The TBolts harassed QB Lance Westendorf on all
3 passing attempts, sacking him twice. He was able to avoid the
rush on a crucial 3rd and 13 to hit Pat Patterson for a 23 yard
gain.
.....Starting
at their own 12 with less than 2 minutes left, Oregon was forced
to go straight to the passing game. QB Calvin Griggs was 3 of 3
for 26 yards but it wasn't enough as the game went into OT. It's
not known why regular TBolts QB's Mike Haskamp and John Charles
did not play. Much to Griggs credit, when he's playing QB the TBolts
are without one of the league's top receivers.
.....In
overtime the Bengals went first and stayed with the ground game.
They covered the 10 yards with 3 straight rushing plays, Derrick
Pleasant taking it in from 3 yards out. The PAT was no good.
.....When
Oregon had their chance from the 10, they couldn't stop Pierce County's
pass rush. Griggs was sacked on first down, and nearly sacked again
on second when he was rushed into throwing and incompletion. A beautiful
fade to David Brannon in the corner of the end zone was overthrown
and that was as close as the Thunderbolts got as Griggs was sacked
again for a big loss on 4th down. |

GAME
2: What a defense!
Eagles 7 - Cavaliers 0 |
.....
The Eagles finished 0-9 last season but they
weren't push overs. They played quality football and lost 4 of their
games by 3 points or less. Playing the Cavaliers, a newly formed
non-league team, was expected to give the Eagles a chance to build
some confidence.
.....
The Cavaliers received the opening
kickoff but gained only 1 yard in three plays and had to punt.
.....
Bellingham started in excellent field
position and was able mount a 5 play 52 yard scoring drive, with
RB Tim Corey banging in from 1 yard out. Gene Sentkowski's PAT gave
the Eagles all the points they would need. All 5 plays were runs,
with Corey gaining 49 yards on 4 attempts. The key play of the drive
was Corey busting a 40 yarder on 3rd and 1. He was met at the line
of scrimmage by Cavalier defensive tackle Jason Booth, but was able
to spin out of the tackle and get to the outside. The other defensive
tackle, Judd Kainz, showed tremendous speed and hustle in catching
Corey at the 3 yard line.
.....
After the ensuing kickoff, it was 3
and out for the Cavaliers again. This time the Eagles started at
their own 38 yard line and mounted a 8 play 65 yard drive that ran
out the clock. The big play was a 23 yard pass from Rob James to
TE Troy Stevenson. Two plays later James hit WR Cord Reisdorf in
the end zone but the pass was dropped.
.....
The Eagles looked pretty good. However,
they looked good last year and didn't win a game. Their dominating
victory should not taken too seriously as the Cavaliers are a new
team, and like most new teams, were short on bodies. |

GAME
3: Who are these guys?
Panthers 6 - Vikings 0 (OT) |
.....
The Vikings are one of the teams that everyone
wanted to see - they had an incredible turnout this spring and many
feel they may compete for the league championship. This was also
the league's first experience with the Panthers, a non-league team
from Salem, Oregon.
.....
On their opening drive, the Vikings
lost 8 yards on the first 2 plays. On third down, QB Eric Franklin
was able to avoid the fierce pass rush and connect with Neil O'Neil
on a 26 yard pass to keep the drive alive. However, 3 plays and
-1 yards later the Vikings were forced to punt. The Panthers held
the Vikings to -9 yards on 4 carries on the opening drive, giving
notice to the PFL that they were for real.
.....
Not wanting to be overshadowed by the
newcomers, the Vikings defense came on in impressive fashion. A
sweep left on first down was viciously stuffed by CB Louis Goncalves.
On 2nd down, Panthers FB Andre Harris was introduced to 1997 PFL
Defensive Player of the Year, Malcom Stewart, who stuffed his rushing
attempt. DB CJ Klassen broke up the pass attempt on third down.
Holding the Panthers to 3 and out, the Vikings appeared in control.
Calvin Clemmens Jr. had an impressive punt return going before being
creamed by Panther LB McQuade in what was one of the biggest hits
of the day. The hit occurred right in front of the Panthers' bench
and was a real spark.
.....
With the
change of momentum the Panthers offense kicked into gear. They gained
55 yards on 7 consecutive running plays, but time ran out at the
Vikings 10 yards line. A field goal would have won the game but
the Panthers' kicker didn't make the trip.
.....
With momentum
on their side the Panthers defense held the Vikings to 2 incomplete
passes and a run for no gain in overtime. On 4th down kicker Mike
Astley, one of the top kickers in the PFL, missed a 19 yard field
goal. The Panthers kept the ball on the ground and needed all 4
plays to score, with the quarterback keeping the ball on an option
to the right and diving in from a yard out. |

GAME
4: Chiefs capitalize on Blue Devil miscues
Chiefs 24 - Blue Devils 0 |
.....
The big news in the Blue Devil camp is the
acquisition of superstar RB D'wayne Buckley. He made his presence
known on the opening kickoff. A deep kick from CHIEFS kicker Rick
Black went over the heads of both Blue Devils return men and bounced
towards the end zone. Buckley caught up to it at the 1 yard line,
broke several tackles, dodged a few others and then outran the CHIEFS
coverage down the left sideline the final 50 yards for an apparent
score. A penalty wiped out the last 60 yards - ouch. On the first
play from scrimmage, Buckley ran left again, although this time
caught by CHIEFS DB Darrick Jasmine after a mere 33 yard gain. The
Blue Devils offense stalled and had to punt. The snap went way over
punter James Beavers' head. He was able to get the ball but was
tackled for a 39 yard loss - ouch again. The CHIEFS got the ball
and the momentum at the Blue Devil's 17 yard line. Two plays later
QB Willie Dorsey, led by great blocking by RB Sheadrah Manning,
scored on a QB keeper reverse. Dorsey hit WR Kendall McFarland on
a beautiful, perfectly executed fade for the 2 point conversion.
..... On the next series, Blue Devil
QB Richard Harris threw and ill advised pass under pressure which
was intercepted by CHIEFS CB Damon Williams. Three plays later it
was Dorsey to McFarland again on a 34 yard touchdown pass. RB Lopez
ran in for 2 points to give the CHIEFS a 16-0 lead.
..... On the following series the Blue
Devils found a way to keep the CHIEFS from scoring a touchdown.
Two incomplete passes and a 24 yard illegal touching penalty gave
the Blue Devils 4th and 34 from their own 18. Again there was trouble
with the punt snap but Beavers had the presence of mind to knock
the ball out of the end zone, giving the CHIEFS a safety.
..... On the ensuing free kick from
their 20 yard line, the Blue Devils shanked the punt high and right.
The CHIEFS front line reacted as if it was a punt. Players and coaches
on the sideline were yelling "get away." A certain impartial
bystander, who was overcome by his coaching roots, repeatedly screamed
"fair catch" but to no avail. Fortunately, Damon Williams
hustled from his upback position just in time to knock the free
ball out of the Blue Devils hands out of bounds. Football players
make football plays.
..... CHIEFS 2nd string QB Steve Fischer
showed great pocket presence in leading a 5 play, 33 yard scoring
drive in the final minutes. On 3rd and short he stood tall in the
pocket under pressure to hit RB Sheadrah Manning on a short out
for a first down. Two plays later he hit WR Bert Kruger on a 28
yard scoring pass as time ran out. |

GAME
5: Bengal special teams cover for lackluster offense
Bengals 7 - Eagles 0 |
|
.....
The Bengals showed the heart of a champion
in finding a way to win even though the Eagles dominated the game.
I can only imagine that after this game the Eagles felt like a
pitcher who threw a no hitter but lost the game.
.....
The Eagles showed that their defensive
effort against the upstart Cavaliers was no fluke when they held
the Bengals to 3 and out on the opening drive. Bengal punter Steve
Turella got off a monster 45 yard punt that was mishandled by
Eagle return man Brad Haydu. Deep in their own end, the Eagles
tried the running game that was so successful against the Cavaliers.
Three runs and -1 yards later the Eagles were punting from their
14 yard line. On the return highlight of the day, Bengal return
man Dave LaBorde caught the high, short punt on a dead run, broke
a few tackles, eluded a few others, and finished with a 47 yard
touchdown.
.....
The Eagles offense had some success
on the ensuing drive, gaining 21 yards on 6 runs. The drive ended
when CB Cyril Johnson made an spectacular over the shoulder interception
on a short 4th down pass.
..... The Eagle defense stepped up
and again held the Bengals when QB Dwayne Brown was sacked on
4th down.
..... The Eagles, starting from their
own 42, only had time for 2 plays. Bengal SS Karl Wright ended
the game with an interception.

6:
Chiefs 14 - Panthers 0 |
.....
Linebacker Mark Whitfield caught the Panther's short opening kickoff
and, like a well coached non-ball carrier, he headed for the sidelines.
Halfway there he had a change of heart and turned up field. 73 yards
later he had the longest kickoff return of the day and the CHIEFS
had a 6-0 lead. They went for 2 but QB Willie Dorsey was flushed
from the pocket and couldn't power his way in.
.....
A dropped pass on 3rd down stalled
the Panther's first drive and it was 3 and out. A shanked punt gave
the CHIEFS the ball back at midfield. Three plays later Dorsey went
right on a QB keeper and outraced the Panther defense for a 45 yard
touchdown. RB Brent Bilke ran in the 2 point conversion to give
the CHIEFS a 14-0 lead.
The Panthers were able to mount a short drive getting a first down
on a 6 yard run by the QB, and 7 yard pass to RB Andre Harris. The
CHIEFS defense then stiffened. On first down the QB was able to
avoid several CHIEFS defenders but did not expect S Darrick Jasmine
to come up and get the sack. On 2nd down, big LB Michael Smalls
pressured the QB into an incomplete pass. A 7 yard draw by Harris
on 3rd and 18 gave the Panthers hope. They tried it again on 4th
down and were stuffed for a loss.
.....
The Panthers defense shut down
the CHIEFS running game setting up a 4th and 21. QB Steve Fischer
hit Beilke for a 38 yard gain allowing the CHIEFS to run out the
clock. |

One of the top teams in the PFL racks up 4 personal fouls in dominating
a new team. Yawn. (stats incomplete)
.....
The highlights: an amazing 65
yard zig-zagging TD run by DeShaun Fontleroy. It was called back
due to a stupid, meaningless clip but still counted for 58 yards.
Two plays later FB Rufus Dean scored from 10 yards out.
.....
RB Lawrence Jackson powering

8: Consolation round
Vikings 6 - Blue Devils 0 |
.....
The Blue Devils bad luck continued as they fumbled away the ball
on the opening play from scrimmage giving the Vikings the ball at
their own 29. The defense appeared up to the task, stuffing RB Justin
Smith for a 6 yard loss on the Vikings' first play. However, Smith's
next 3 runs went for 10, 16 and 9 yards and the Vikings were up
6-0.
..... There appeared to be hope for
the Blue Devils as QB Richard Harris sprinted for a 9 yard gain
on the first play of the next drive. It wasn't to be as 2 penalties
and a incomplete pass were to much to overcome and the Blue Devils
were forced to punt. Powerful Vikings' FB Darren Reinhardt rattled
off a 13 yard run on first down. Three more short runs set up a
4th and 2 situation. The Vikings jumped offsides making it 4th and
7. Blue Devils CB Kiko Soto broke up a pass from QB Tom Nakane to
WR Neil O'Neil.
..... The Blue Devils took over on
the Viking 43 looking to score. On second down, Viking DB James
Adams dropped a relatively easy interception right in front of the
Blue Devils bench. The Blue Devils razzed him pretty thoroughly
even the the play didn't count due to a Blue Devils penalty. On
the next play Adams silenced the Blue Devils bench by intercepting
another pass and returning it 42 yards giving the Vikings' offense
the opportunity to run out the clock. |

9: NWFL PRESEASON TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP
Bengals 15 - Chiefs 0 |
.....
Bengal kicker Eli Swanson got the Bengals off to a great start by
driving the kick off into the endzone. Three plays later QB Willie
Dorsey, the "horse" on which the CHIEFS' offense rides,
suffered a compound fracture of his left forearm while trying to
avoid a sack by LB Sio Fakatoufifita. You could literally hear the
wind go out of the CHIEFS' sails.
..... "I put my hand out to stiff
arm him and he grabbed it and fell. His facemask landed right on
my arm, breaking both the bones," explained Dorsey.
..... In an act of pure class and sportsmanship
that is representative of the entire Bengals organization, not only
did Fakatoufifita apologize to Dorsey when it happened, but also
visited him in the hospital after the jamboree. The good news for
the CHIEFS fans is that Dorsey expects to be back in 5 weeks.
..... The CHIEFS were forced to punt
and Bengals took over at the CHIEFS' 35 yard line. On 2 and 14,
QB Dwayne Brown found WR Mike Evans wide open behind the secondary
for a 32 yard gain. CHIEFS' CB Majaqua Gregory caught Evans to save
the touchdown. Three plays later, RB Keith Evans scored from 4 yards
out.
..... On the CHIEFS' second possession
RB Sheadrah Manning rattled off a 15 yard run on the 1st play from
scrimmage, but the drive stalled after that. QB Steve Fischer did
have WR Kendall McFarland open deep down the left sideline on 3rd
down but he was hit as he threw and the ball fluttered. RB Brent
Bilke did an excellent job of breaking up a potential interception.
Bilke was stuffed on 4th down and the CHIEFS turned the ball over
on downs.
..... The Bengals' QB Brown was stopped
for a short gain on 1st down sweep by LB Michael Smalls. The Bengals
weren't having much success on the ground so they went up top. On
3rd down Brown threw deep to Cyril Johnson down the left sideline.
CB Majaqua Gregory made a spectacular play, diving in front of Johnson
to knock down the pass. Brown went deep to Johnson again on the
next play. Gregory had excellent coverage but Johnson out leapt
him for a 47 yard score.
..... Speedy return man Darrick Jasmine
caught the ensuing kickoff at the 17 and raced up the right sideline.
He ran into a wall a Bengals and was forced to change direction.
In doing so, he absolutely pancaked one of his blockers. Unfazed,
"Jazz" ran all the way across the field and then cut up
back up the middle right into Bengal's LB Shannon Thomas who laid
him out forcing a fumble. The Bengals recovered and ran out the
clock. |
