|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The
Renton Ravens traveled to Spokane and played hard in front of a boisterous
crowd of well over 1,000 people but could not overcome the Nightmare's size
and depth.
The Nightmare opened the game with a 5 play-54 yard drive, all on the ground. QB Jeff Olsen swept around the right end from 14 yards out for the games first score. Allan Buechler's PAT put the Nightmare ahead 7-0. RB Ben Johson pounded for 29 yards on just 3 carries during the drive. The Ravens combined complex blocking schemes with a healthy dose of misdirection to take advantage of their quickness. Helped by a 15 yard facemasking penalty against the Nightmare defense, the Ravens answered with a 4 play-70 yard drive, also all on the ground. Donovan Weems powered his way into the endzone from 12 yards out - dragging 2 Nightmare defenders with him. Jerome Cornelius' PAT was blocked by Nightmare LB Jeff Baxter. Rob Martin returned the ensuing kickoff 41 yards to set up the Nightmare offense with a short field. They needed just 7 plays to cover the 44 yards and RB Ben Johnson scored from 3 yards out to give the Nightmare a 13-6 lead. Starting at their own 30, the Ravens took 12 plays to move the ball down to the Nightmare 19. On 4th and 5, the QBs pass down the middle was tipped by the intended receiver and then intercepted by Eric Farmen. The Nightmare drove 63 yards in 10 plays before being stopped at the Raven 24 yard line. Allan Buechler's 41 yard FG attempt was a bit wide. The Nightmare depth enabled them to rotate in fresh bodies and they eventually wore down the Ravens - many of whom were playing both ways. The Ravens lack of depth combined with 4 turnovers in the 2nd half turned a close game into a blowout. After allowing the Ravens to rush for 94 yards on 10 carries in the first quarter, the Nightmare defense adjusted to the blocking schemes and misdirection and only allowed 37 yards on 19 carries the rest of the game. The Raven passing game just wasn't in sync enough to pick up the slack. The Ravens looked especially sharp considering it was their first time experiencing live action. They're talented at the skill positions, but like most teams, could use more depth on the line. Once their QBs and WRs work together more they should have a potent offense. Their defense is full of big hitters who do not hesitate to inflict pain. The Nightmare dressed 60 players and they all could play. They have excellent depth at RB with 4-5 guys in the 6'-220 pound range. Two big QBs with rifle arms throwing to a solid corps of tall receivers balances the offense. The defense was solid after figuring out the Ravens misdirection. |
