A physical Bengal defense combined with a Cavalier offense that just wasn't in sync combined for lopsided 34-6 win for Pierce County. The Bengals shut out the Cavs for 59 minutes and 58 seconds. A 27 yard pass interference penalty in the endzone gave the Cavs the ball at the Bengal 1 yard line with under 2 seconds left and then QB Jimmy Williams was stuffed on the QB sneak but was able to bounce outside and outrun the defense to the pylon as time expired.

Jaron Johnson began the Bengal onslaught with this 7 yard TD. (pic 2)
John Stepney decleated the Cavalier returner on the ensuing kickoff.

The Bengal defense set the tone early as safety Sio Fakatoufifita intercepted Williams on the first play of the game. The Bengals needed just 6 plays, all on the ground, to cover the 37 yards and take a 7-0 lead. FB Kevin Clark tallied 26 yards on 2 carries on the drive, including a 19 yard burst up the middle that set up Jaron Johnson's 7 yard touchdown run off right tackle.

The Cavs went 3 and out on their next possession and lost starting RB Ron Parker to a strained achilles tendon. Out of nine Cavalier possessions in the first half, 6 went '3 and out', 2 were ended by turnovers, and they turned the ball over on downs going for it on 4th and 44 to run out the clock at the end the first half.

Cavalier punter Robert Jelvik boomed a 65 yard punt and Sio Fakatoufifita returned it 17 yards out to the 24.
Robert Brown sacked Jimmy Williams at the Cavalier 2 setting up Stepney's 29 yard punt return for a touchdown.

The teams punted back and forth throughout the rest of the 1st quarter with the Bengals slowly winning the battle of field position. Cavalier LB/punter Robert Jelvik field. Bengal punter Nick Klamke hit a 57 yarder on the first play of the 2nd quarter. The Cavalier return man bobbled the ball was quickly tackled at his own 5 yard line. A brutal sack by LB Robert Brown forced the Cavs to punt from their own 2. Hurrying to get the ball off, the Cav punter hit a low line drive that was fielded on the run at the 29 by John Stepney who took it back untouched for a score. Bengals 14 - Cavs 0

LB Robert Jelvik knocked away this pass forcing the Bengals to punt. Jelvik finished with 8 tackles and 2 sacks in addition to averaging nearly 45 yards on 6 punts. MLB Steve Matychowiak Fakatoufifita handed off to Daniel Hunter on this punt return reverse and Hunter returned the ball 25 yards out to the 39.

After the next Cavalier possession Jelvik hit a 47 yard punt that pushed Bengal return man Fakatoufifita back to his 28 yard line. He returned it 72 yards to give the Bengals a 21-0 lead.

The Bengals fumbled away the next punt giving the Cavs a first down at the Bengal 35 but the Cavs could capitalize and went 3 and out.

WR Webb hauled in this 23 yard catch late in the 2nd quarter

The Bengals had a short drive going before Cavalier LB Jelvik forced a fumble while sacking Bengal QB David Stump. LB Erik Olson recovered at the Bengal 18. The Cavs gave the ball right back with a botched exchange between the center and QB - a problem that plagued the Cavs throughout the first half. Bengals DT #78 recovered at the 19. Stump hit WR Webb for 23 yards to move the ball near midfield with just over a minute left. Cavalier safety Orlando Johnson momentarily got the Cavs on the board with a 60 yard interception return on the next play but the Cavaliers were hit with a allegedly phantom clipping penalty on the return. Three more botched snaps brought up 4th and 44 with just a few seconds left. Rather than punt and risk another Bengal return, RB Jeff Kaskus ran up the middle for 17 yards as time expired.

The Bengals opened the 2nd half with a 10 play - 44 yard drive that resulted in a Chris Horan's 33 yard field goal. The Cavs offense finally gained a couple of first downs on runs by Richard Cranford and Jeff Kaskus, but the drive ended on another fumbled snap (recovered by #44). The Bengals drove 43 yards in 7 plays before settling for another Horan field goal on the first play of the 4th quarter. This one was straight down the middle from 39 yards out with plenty of distance to spare.

QB Niko Scott connected with TE LaMarcus Ford on this 17 yard touchdown early in the 4th quarter.

Again the Cavs offense was stopped by a fumble. Williams hit Kaskus on a swing pass and Bengal #55 knocked the ball loose. LB Robert Brown recovered at the Cav 17. The Bengals immediately capitalized with Niko Scott hitting TE LaMarcus Ford on a post-corner route on 1st down. Horan's PAT gave the Bengals a 34-0 lead.

The treams traded possessions throughout the 4th quarter. Late in the game Bengal LB Mike Ward intercepted a Williams pass and returned the ball into Cavalier territory. The Bengals drove as deep as the Cavalier 24 before safety Chris Potts jumped in front of a Niko Scott pass and returning the ball out to the 32. Williams hit Cranford on a slant for 27 yards down to the Bengal 28. On the next play Williams lofted a pass to Paul Kennedy, who was surrounded by 3 Bengals in the endzone. The Bengals were penalized for pass interference giving the Cavaliers a first down at the one yard line with under 2 seconds left. Williams tried a QB sneak but the Bengals had overloaded the middle. As time expired Williams bounced off the pile and outraced the Bengals to the corner of the endzone to avoid the shutout.
