The Oregon Panthers
bounced back from last weeks loss with a stifling, opportunistic defense
that shut down Pierce County's powerful running game and forced four Bengal
turnovers. Their offense took advantage of good field position and a couple
of 60+ yard plays by RB Ty Williams.
The
Bengals offense nearly hit paydirt on their first play with QB David
Stump lofting a bomb over the Panther defense that went off the fingertips
of WR Jesse Baines. A fumbled snap on 2nd down put the Bengals into
3rd and long. They converted when Stump hit TE Jon Allen over the middle
for 10 yards and the Bengals were on the move. RB Jaron Johnson went
off right tackle for a big gain. DB Aaron Taylor came up to make the
hit and reached in and pulled the ball loose (left). LB Dan Salas was
there to cover the ball and give the Panther offense a first down at
midfield.
Back
to back fumbled snaps pushed the Panthers back to a 3rd and 16 but they
converted when QB Naamon Archer lofted a strike to a wide open TE Jim
Haxton for 18 yards. The drive stalled after that and the RB/P Ty Williams
booted the ball into the endzone for a touchback.
 The
Bengals offense went 3 and out but the Panthers where penalized for
running into the punter and once again the Panthers punt return team
extended an opponents drive early in the game. Once again the Panther
defense stepped up and held the Bengals to 3 and out. DE Greg Gadbois
and Scott Dizmang combined for a sack on 2nd down (left) and CB Frank
Ulrich nearly intercepted a pass on 3rd (right) but WR David Poole was
able to knock the ball away. A short Bengal punt set up the Panthers
near midfield.
The
Panthers offense finally moved the ball with Archer hitting WR Marvin
Bronson for 32 yards down to the Bengal 18 on a deep out. RB Ty Williams
was able to move ball down to the 12 with a burst up the middle but the
drive stalled from there and Jay Dizmang put the Panthers on the board
with a 29 yard field goal.
  A
25 yard kickoff return by Jesse Baines set up the Bengals near midfield
but once again they went 3 and out. A good punt pushed Panther return
man back to his 15 and he was only able to get the ball out to the 20
before being stopped. Two runs up the middle netted only 5 yards for
the Panthers. On 3rd down QB Brandon Victor dropped back behind solid
protection and heaved a bomb down the left sideline to RB Ty Williams
at the Bengals 40. Williams powered through two Bengal defenders (left)
and was on his way to the endzone when he appeared to run out of gas
and was caught from behind at the 13 by DB Daniel Hunter (pic).
On the next play Victor hit Bronson on a perfectly thrown fade to put
the Panthers up 9-0 (right).
Starting
at their own 20 the Bengals discovered their tight-ends. Five consecutive
completions from QB John Brown to TEs Jon Allen and LaMarcus Ford moved
the ball from the Bengals 20 to the Panthers 22. The drive stalled from
there and the Bengals came up short on a 45 yard field goal attempt.
The
teams traded short drives that ended in interceptions by Travis
Thomas and Brandon
Moncada (pic

Victor threw to Ulrich who was double covered at the goal line. Safety
Sio Fakatoufifita came down with the ball and returned it 99 yards for
a score but the Bengals were flagged for taunting during the return.
 The
Panthers opened the 2nd half by going 80 yards in just 4 plays. Ty Williams
burst through the middle and outran the Bengal defense for 67 yards
to put the Panthers up 16-0 (left) (pic

The
teams punted back and forth a couple of times after each offense went
3 and out. Late in the 3rd quarter the Panthers drove 55 yards in 6 plays
to go up 23-0. This time it was Naamon Archer hitting WR John Lewis from
15 yards out (right). Williams tallied 29 yards on 4 carries on the drive.
 Jesse
Baines finally put the Bengals on the board when he returned the ensuing
kickoff 80 yards for a score. On their next drive the Bengals moved
the ball as deep as the Panther 27 before being stuffed for a 3 yard
loss on 4th and 2. That's as close as their offense got to the endzone.
  The
Panthers went 3 and out and Dana Pompetti boomed a 53 yard punt the
pushed Jesse Baines back to his 17 yard line. Baines returned the ball
into Panther territory but much of the return was nullified by a penalty
and the Bengals took over at their own 25. After his first down pass
attempt went off the finger tips of his intended receiver, Bengal QB
Niko Wells rolled to his left on 2nd down and threw deep. Panther DB
Andre Conley jumped in front of the intended receiver for the interception
(left). He returned the ball all the way down to the Bengal 6 yard line.
Three plays later Victor threw over Bengal coverage (pic)
and hit WR Frank Ulrich for the score giving the Panthers a 30-7 lead
(right).
The
Bengals 4th turnover of the game ended their next drive. On 3rd and
2, Wells scrambled for the first down but lost the ball when he was
tackled by DT Robert Ostrander. Aaron Taylor recovered and the Panther
offense ran out the clock.
