The King County Jaguars dominated the West Sound Orcas throughout the first half and then held on for a 42-18 victory. The Jaguar defense dominated the first half. They had 4 takeaways and allowed the Orcas only 17 yards of offense. The Orcas regrouped at halftime and outgained the Jags 210-143 in the 2nd half.
The difference in the game seemed to be the Jaguar passing game. The athletic duo of Jaguar QBs combined to complete nearly 57% of their passes, for 220 yards, 3 scores and only 1 meaningless interception. More importantly, although applying near constant pressure, the Orca defense simply couldn't lay a finger on the Jag QBs. They routinely scrambled away from trouble to buy time or scrambled for big gains. The balanced Jaguar offense kept the Orca defense guessing. Conversely, the Orca passing game struggled and threw more interceptions than completions. |

The Jags opened the game with a 3 and out series. Malachi DeWalt, who still has to be considered among the best backs in the league, had a long run into Orcas territory nullified by a holding penalty. DeWalt came up short on a 3rd and 20 run and the Jags were forced to punt. The Jags defense
set the tone for the entire first half on their first play by hitting
the Orca RB in the backfield. 11 out of 15 Orca rushing attempts in
the first half gained 3 yards or less. Eight were for no gain or a loss.

On the ensuing kickoff a big hit by Jaguar LB Will Davis forced a fumble. Orca Dave Snyder alertly picked up the ball and advanced it out to midfield. With runs of 17 yards by Bobbie Lee and 12 yards by Ramon Martinez, the Orcas moved down to the 10 before turning it over on downs. On 4th and 2 from the Jaguar 8, although hit by Dimitrius Millow as he threw, Martinez still managed to find an open receiver in the endzone but the ball was dropped. |

On their 3rd possession,
the Jags moved the ball out near midfield before having to punt. Fielding
the punt after a very high bounce, the Orcas' returner was nailed at
the 10 by Carlos Clark as soon as he touched the ball. Edgar Perez and
#54 teamed up for a 3rd down sack pushing the Orcas back to their 3.
The punt snap was high and as the punter went up for the ball he came
down out of bounds giving the Jags a safety. |

the first play of the 2nd quarter new Orcas QB Don Purser threw deep down
the left sideline but the ball was underthrown and CB Ernie Populus had
his 2nd interception of the game (picture, left).
The Jags took over at their own 9 and embarked on a 7 play - 91 yard scoring
drive. Johnson avoided heavy pressure from Kevin Shearer and just before
scrambling out of bounds he lofted a pass to McAllister for 21 yards.
A flanker screen to WR Carlos Clark gained 25 yards, moving the ball down
to the Orca 48. RB Malachi DeWalt took over from there with runs of 34,
17 and a 2 yard touchdown over a pair of Orcas linebackers (picture,

Orcas
coach Steve McDaniel must have given the halftime speech of the season
because the Orcas came out for the 2nd half ready to play. They opened
the half with an 11 play, 56 yard scoring drive. The key play was a 22
yard swing pass to Larry Bates on 3rd and 12. Bates was nearly dropped
for a 6 yard loss but was able to sidestep the would be tackler and rumble
through the Jaguar defense to pick up the first down. Bates went straight
up the middle on runs of 12 and 9 yards (picture, left)
to move the ball inside the one. On 3rd and goal Kinsey tried a QB sneak
but DT Khaleeq Abdul-Aziz and DE Nick Caldwell were able to push the center
back into the hole. LB Malachi Dewalt was able to squirm through and get
a hit on Kinsey but couldn't wrap him up. Kinsey was able get around the
left end and dove into the endzone putting the Orcas on the board. The
Orcas gained 3 first downs on the drive, equaling their total from the
entire 1st half. |

The Jags answered immediately. Poor tackling allowed Akeem McAllister to return the kickoff 58 yards down to the Orcas 25. DE/K Kevin Shearer made the touchdown saving tackle. On first down QB Leo Dickerson kept the ball on an option and gained 14 yards. On 3rd and 7 from the 8, Dickerson avoided pressure from Kevin Shearer and found McAllister all alone in the back of the endzone. The Orcas came right back with a 4 play, 72 yard drive, all on the ground. Bates rumbled straight up the middle for gains of 16 and 32 yards, and Todd Lewis added 17, also right up the middle. Kinsey faked a handoff to Bobbie Lee and swept around right end from 7 yards out to finish the drive. The Orcas went for two but SS Jackie Triplett knocked away Kinsey's pass.

The Orcas couldn't capitalize and went 3 and out. The Jaguars ran into the punter giving the Orcas a first down. Larry Bates went up the middle for 13 yards giving the Orcas a first down near midfield. Under pressure from MLB Tommy Thompson, Kinsey lofted a pass down the middle. Jaguar safety Travis Bracken intercepted the ball and went untouched down the right sideline 73 yards for a touchdown. Todd Lewis' 34 yard kickoff return set up the Orcas near midfield where they embarked on a 7 play, 59 yard scoring drive. Bates finished the drive with a 1 yard plunge. The entire drive was on the ground and 5 plays resulting in 52 yards were right up the middle. The Orcas went for two again and this time it was Malachi DeWalt knocking away Kinsey's quick pass to Bates. |
