Clash of the Titans VI

In one of the NWFL's most heated rivalries, the Puget Sound Jets defeated the Multnomah County Bucs 27-12 to take sole possession of first place and probable home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Matt Stanwood's booming opening kickoff pushed Terrance Ivory back into the endzone and he returned the ball out to the 26. On the games first play from scrimmage, Jet QB Lance Westendorf went over the top to WR Michael Dwyer who was running free down the right sideline behind the Buc secondary. Dwyer outraced the Buc defenders all the down to the 5 yard line before being knocked out of bounds by Antonio Sparrow. RB Andre Edwards finished the 2 play - 74 yard drive with spirited run right up the middle. Edwards appeared to be stuffed at the line of scrimmage but kept his legs churning and fought his way into the endzone. Mike Crowley's PAT put the Jets up 7-0 with less than a minute gone in the game.

LBs Brett Weiburg (#45) and Dion Alexander stopped WR Julian Williams for an 8 yard loss on this reverse.

After a Bucs 3 and out the Jets took over at their own 29. Buc LB Shay Dean blitzed in and blindsided Westendorf who appeared to fumble (left). DE James Crittenden picked up the ball and headed for the endzone, but the officials ruled the play an incomplete pass. A few plays later on 4th and 3 from the 48, Westendorf threw down the middle only to be picked off by Buc CB Maurice France. France returned the ball out to the Buc 40.

Assisted by 3 first downs on Jet penalties, the Bucs managed to move the ball as far as the Jets 17 before getting pushed back by a Will Postell sack. Stanwood came in to attempt a 45 yard field goal but the snap was short and the Jets took over on downs. The teams punted back and forth for the remainder of the 1st quarter and throughout the 2nd, with neither team threatening to score.

The Jets outgained the Bucs 115 - 29 in the first half but only led 7-0.

Despite being flattened by Ed Harris, Smith came back to hit Julian Williams and Josh Branch for 20 and 65 yards on the next two plays.
The Bucs mishandled the 2nd half kickoff at their own goal line and were fortunate to recover the ball. The Jets were hit with a personal foul on the play which gave the Bucs some breathing room at the 18. On 2nd down Buc QB Derek Smith dropped back to pass and was brutally blindsided by DE Edward Harris (left). Johnson was unphased and withstood the Jet pass rush on 3rd down to hit Julian Williams for 20 yards and a first down at the 35. On the next play Johnson hit Josh Branch on a flanker screen. Branch caught the ball at the 35 and outraced the Jet defense 65 yards for a score (right). Terrance Ivory blocked Jim Snowadski's PAT attempt. The Jets still had the lead at 7-6, but the Bucs clearly had the momentum.

Starting at their own 21, Westendorf and the RB missed the handoff on a draw play and he was quickly taken down for a 7 yard loss. On 2nd down, Edwards tried to get outside on a sweep but found nothing but Bucs. He reversed direction but didn't find that way any easier. He was brought down at the 3 by DE JJ Rivers. Westendorf his Freeman Baysinger on a quick hitch on 3rd down but he only managed 11 yards bringing up 4th and 17. O'Laughlin hit a decent punt that landed at midfield and then rolled all the way down to the Buc 13.

Disaster almost struck for the Bucs as DT Tony Bates was able to disrupt a delayed handoff a force QB Derek Johson to fumble. RB/WR Darren Guinn covered the ball but a few plays later the Bucs were forced to punt. Milton Myers fielded a short Matt Stanwood punt at midfield and returned it 13 yards into Buc territory. The Jets needed just 4 plays to cover the 38 yards with Westendorf hitting WR Jakoba Square from 14 yards out. Sean O'Laughin's PAT put the Jets up 14-6 with just a few seconds left in the 3rd quarter.

Julian Williams 27 yard kickoff return set up the Bucs at their own 45. As the 4th quarter began, Derek Johson hit Josh Branch for 8 yards and then Michael Dwyer for 4 yards and a first down. A late hit on CB Cory Walker moved the ball down to the Jet 28. Johnson hit Darren Guinn for 10 yards and another first down, and again a Jet penalty on the play moved the ball half the distance to the goal. DE Brett Weiburg pressured Johnson into an incomplete pass, but he cam right back to hit Antonio Sparrow on a fade for the score on the next play. The Bucs went for two and Johnson appeared to hit Williams but he was ruled to have caught the ball out of bounds.

Milton Myers 30 yard kickoff return set up the Jets at their 32. Jet QB Wade Sparks came in and mastered an impressive 9 play - 68 yard scoring drive. He was 3 of 4, for 38 yards and 2 first downs on the drive. He also ran twice for 15 yards, including 10 yards untouched straight up the middle for the touchdown. The PAT went wide, but the Jets had a 20-12 lead midway through the 4th quarter.

Sean O'Laughlin's kickoff was fielded at the 15 and the Buc returner got as far as the 25 before being blasted by AL Brown. The ball popped loosed and was covered by Milton Myers at the Buc 23. On the Jets first play Michael Bible went up the middle, cut outside and outraced the Buc defense down the left sideline to the endzone. #24's PAT put the Jets up 27-12.

The Bucs took over at their own 25 after the Jet kickoff went out of bounds. Under heavy pressure from LB Dion Alexander, Johnson overthrew his receiver deep down the middle and Terrance Ivory was there for the interception. The Jets moved down to the 38 and #24's 55 yard field goal attempt was wide left.

QB Doug Ashley came in for the Bucs. After a Jet penalty nullified an interception, he hit Shay Dean and Darren Guinn on back to back 22 yard gains down to the Jet 8. Great defense created 4 consecutive incompletions and the Jets took over on downs. One Michael Himes blast up the middle for 7 yards and the game was over.van
