What a game!

Sidney Orange (left) is led around the corner for a gain of 6 by Jeff Hudson (center) and Mike Harris (right).
Derrick Williams 7 yard catch was short of a first down.
The Hawks offense started the game at their own 24. Sydney Orange and Mike Harris combined to pound out one first down but then the drive stalled. On 3rd and 10 DE JJ Rivers forced Hawk QB Brad Collins out of the pocket. Collins found WR Derrick Williams 7 yards downfield (left) but CB Maurice France tackled Williams immediately, forcing the Hawks to punt.

OT Jon Hammersmark had no problem with the Bucs speed on this play. QB Brad Collins initially had solid protection but DE JJ Rivers eventually forced him out of the pocket.

WR Julian Williams
DE Marty Northcroft sacked Derek Johnson on 3rd down.
After a short punt the Bucs took over on their own 43. On their first play Buc QB Derek Johnson went deep down the middle to WR Julian Williams for a 29 yard gain (left). The Hawk defense stiffened and two Buc running plays netted only 1 yard. DE Marty Northcroft sacked Johnson on 3rd down (right). The Bucs went for it on 4th and 10 and Johnson found Williams streaking alone down the right sideline (right) but his pass was mere inches too long and the Bucs turned the ball over on downs.

Thanks to pressure from Hawk DT #66, Johnson just missed Williams on 4th and 10 from the Hawk 28.

Buc DB Maurice France came up with this interception at the Hawk 36.
Buc safety Tige McSwain recovers a fumbled snap at the Hawk 35.

The Hawks tried to go long their first play but the ball was underthrown and intercepted by Maurice France (left) at the Bucs 26.

The Bucs tried to strike on their first play - Johnson threw a deep corner route but the receiver had run a deep post. Hawk DB Arthur Sanchez was there for the easy interception.

The Hawks fumbled away the snap on their first play and Buc safety Tige McSwain recovered (left). Once again the Bucs went deep on their first play. This time Johnson threw down the middle into a crowd and it was Julian Williams who went up and made a play on the ball (right). He landed about the 2 and rolled into the endzone for a Buc touchdown. Jim Snowadski's PAT put the Bucs up 7-0 midway through the first.

Julian Williams' 35 yard catch and roll put the Bucs up 7-0 midway through the first quarter.

The last 5 plays went like this:
Fourth down Bucs: Johnson barely overthrowing a wide open Williams
Fist down Hawks: Maurice France interception
Fist down Bucs: Arthur Sanchez interception
First down Hawks: fumbled snap recovered by Tige McSwain
First down Bucs: Johson to Williams for a 35 yard TD.

A Hawk personal foul on the PAT had the Bucs kicking off from the 50 and Matt Stanwood's kick easily sailed through the endzone for a touchback. On first down Mike Harris went up the middle for an acrobatic 11 yards (left). That's all the Bucs defense would yield as DT Chris Borgelt pressured Collins into an incompletion on first down. Harris was stopped after just a yard gain on a sweep to the left by safeties Brett Wells and Tige McSwain on 2nd down, and a Harris draw play (right) came up a yard short on 3rd down.

Even with OT Jeff Hudson (#57) sealing the outside, Mike Harris 3rd came up a yard short on this 3rd down draw play.

A four yard punt set up the Bucs at the Hawk 40 yard line on their next drive. They were going nowhere fast when a roughing the passer penalty gave them a first down. The Bucs took over from there with Johnson hitting Williams for 26 yards, and then 2 Darren Guinn runs gained 10 more as the first period ended. On 1st and goal from the 4, Johnson threw a fade to Antonio Sparrow (left). The Hawk DB had great position but Sparrow made leaping catch over him. Marty Northcroft blocked Snowadski's PAT attempt holding the Buc lead to 13-0.

The Hawks turned the ball over again on their next possession. RB Sidney Orange went around the right side on a sweep. As he turned the corner his feet slid out from under him and he stumbled forward before going down at midfield. He slammed the ball down in frustration while getting up, but since he hadn't been touched down the ball was live. Safety Tige McSwain alertly picked up the ball and pushed through the crowd down to the 45 yard line.

Pressure from the Hawk front four prevented the Bucs from capitalizing as Johnson was hurried into 3 consecutive incompletions. A towering Buc punt forced Ricky Daley to fair catch at his own 13. There was some confusion on the part of the Buc defense as the Hawks offense broke the huddle and Hawk WR and MVP candidate Jimi McCollum was uncovered split out to the left. Two Buc defenders saw the error and ran out wide to cover him. One headed back to his previous position, and then they decided to switch - right as QB Brad Collins took the snap from center. McCollum went deep and Collins hit him in stride way behind the Buc defense. 87 yards later, the Hawks were on the board. The PAT went wide left leaving the score at, Bucs 13 - Hawks 6.

Jim Skerski boomed the ensuing kickoff 74 yards in the air, and it easily bounced the remaining yard out of the back of the endzone. The Bucs drove the ball out to their own 41 before disaster struck. On 3rd and 3, Johnson hit his intended receiver on a quick slant, but the ball bounced off his hands up into the air. Hawk defender #26 intercepted the ball and returned it down to the Buc 9 yard line. A penalty on the return pushed the ball out the 24. On 3rd and 10 Collins connected with WR Brian Carter across the middle for 19 yards. Two Mike Harris runs put the ball in the endzone. The Hawks went for 2 but pressure forced an errant pass. Bucs 13 - Hawks 12

Back to back sacks by Marty Northcroft and Jeff Berry forced the Bucs to punt on their next possession. The Hawks went to their hurry up offense but a miscommunication between QB and receiver resulted in an interception as the half expired.

After a short Buc drive ended in a punt, the Hawks took over at their own 33. Two Mike Harris runs gained 12 yards and a first down. Collins hit Derrick Williams for 34 yards down to the Buc 21. DB Julian Williams stuffed Orange for a 4 yard loss on first down, and then a fumbled snap on 2nd brought up 3rd and 19. Collins again went up top to Williams who outjumped the Buc defender in the endzone (left). The Hawks attempt for 2 points came up short, but still they had taken their first lead of the game, 18-13.

Buc RB Darren Guinn
The Bucs again could only move out to their 41 before having to punt. Matt Stanwood boomed a 42 yarder that pushed McCollum back to the Hawk 17. His return was nullified by a penalty and the Hawks started out at their own 10. Penalties moved the ball back to the 4. On 3rd and 16, Collins was pressured in the endzone. He was able to spin away from DE JJ Rivers only to be tripped up by DT Chris Borgelt (right). Although Collins went down in the endzone, he had the presence of mind to reach the ball across the goal line and the refs bought it. Jose Moreno came into punt with the ball spotted well inside the 1 yard line. The Bucs took advantage of the short snap and rushed someone hard from the outside - he missed the ball but hit Jose low. Roughing the punter, first down Hawks at the 15. The Hawks offense couldn't capitalize on the gift first down and again had to punt 4 plays later.

Starting at the Hawk 38, the Bucs drove down inside the 10 as the 3rd quarter expired. On 4th and goal from the 6, Johnson hit Williams on a quick slant. He dove for the endzone but was stopped just inches short by DB #26 (right).

Leading 18-13 early in the 4th quarter, the Hawks goal stand set up their offense at their own 1 yard line. The defensive effort was wasted when a fumbled handoff was recovered in the endzone by Buc linebacker Jason Dean (above).

On the next play from scrimmage after the Buc kickoff, the Hawks again fumbled the ball and the Bucs recovered on the 1 yard line. Another effort by the Hawk defense appeared to deny the Bucs as receiver Julian Williams was stopped at the 1 on 4th and 6. The Hawk defender was called for holding on the play giving the Bucs an automatic first down. QB Derek Johnson hit TE Shay Dean for the score on the next play (left). Josh Branch outjumped the Hawk defense for the 2 point conversion (right) and the Hawks 5 point lead was quickly a 9 point deficit.

A 33 yard kickoff return set up the Hawks at their own 40. A Mike Harris run moved the ball across midfield. Aaron Rambo hit Derrick Williams for 29 yards down to the 20. The drive stalled from there and Jim
Skerski came on for a 37 yard field goal. The hold was botched and the Bucs took over at the 44 but couldn't move the ball. Matt Stanwood's punt bounced inside the 25 where it was knocked down by a Buc. Thinking the play was over, the Bucs started leaving the field as the ball rolled back to the 14. Knowing the Hawks could choose to take the ball where it was touched by the Bucs if something bad happened, returner Jimi McCollum picked up the ball and took off. Many of the Bucs watched in disbelief as McCollum returned the ball 50 yards down to the Buc 36 before being chased down by Antonio Sparrow. A penalty nullified most of the return so it was a cheap special teams lesson for the Bucs.

DT Chris Borgelt's 3rd down sack of QB Tom Linarelli ended the Hawk drive and the Bucs took over near midfield after a Hawk punt.

The Bucs went to work on the clock. On 3rd and inches QB Derek Johnson pushed ahead for 4 yards to keep the drive alive. Two plays later he was chased out of the pocket by Paul Riley and threw the ball away. MLB Eric Bellamy intercepted the pass but landed out of bounds. Matt Stanwood came in to punt on 4th and 12 from the Hawk 35. The snap went over his head and the ball bounced all the way back to the Buc 31 before he could fall on it.

The Hawks needed just one play to make the game interesting with Jimi McCollum's 27 yard touchdown pass from Tom Linarelli. McCollum caught the ball at the 10 and was instantly wrapped up by safety Brett Wells (left). Somehow McCollum shook off Wells, eluded Antonio Sparrow and headed into the endzone (right). Down by 3, the Hawks went for 2 but Linarelli's pass was intercepted by Sparrow in the endzone.

Needing a field goal to tie the game, the Hawks lined up for the onside kick. Jose Moreno hit a slow roller that stayed low to the ground. Rather than wait for the ball to come to him, Buc safety Tige McSwain ran up and was able to field the ball cleanly. His momentum carried him through one would be tackler and then he went untouched into the endzone (left). Once again the Bucs led by 9 and the game seemed to be over.

On the kickoff Buc kicker Matt Stanwood hit a knuckle ball that landed short and bounced past the Hawk returners. The ball took a few elusive bounces away from returner Jimi McCollum giving the Bucs ample to zero in on him. The ball was clearly about to roll out of bounds at the 5 when McCollum seemingly made a huge mistake by picking it up. He was instantly swarmed by Bucs but somehow was able to dance and dodge around the first wave. He took several shots along the sideline but kept his balance and eventually broke into the clear. The race was on and it was unlikely that any Buc was going to catch him. He looked to see if anyone was close and that's when he saw it - a flag. His frustration was evident as he finished what would have been a spectacular 95 yard return. Had the play stood the Hawks had plenty of time to drive into field goal range if they could have recovered the upcoming onside kick. However, the return still counted for 58 yards and the Hawks were able to drive for a meaningless touchdown as time expired.
