.....The Colts dominated the first quarter
with the trio of RB Tristan Gray, FB Damien Coaxum and QB Ryan Reynolds
combining for 68 yards rushing on 14 carries. The Vikings netted just
10 yards on their three possessions in the quarter.
.....The Colts threatened to score on their
second possession, moving 50 yards in 5 plays down to the Viking 11,
but the Viking defense came up big three plays in a row. On 2nd and
5 from the 11, QB Ryan Reynolds was stopped on a QB sweep for a 5 yard
loss by Louis Newsom. Tristan Gray was stopped for no gain by LB Jordan
Willis on 3rd down. On 4th and 10 from the 16, Reynolds dropped back
to pass but was forced to run by pressure up the middle from Mike Seekins.
Reynolds swept left and was met by Tony Heard at the 10 yard line. The
ball came loose and was recovered at the 9 by Seekins.
.....A 48 yard punt return by Tony Thomas
gave the Colts a first and goal at the Vikings 10 to start their next
possession. The Viking defense stepped up again, this time it was JJ
Quinlan stopping Gray for an 8 yard loss on 4th down from the 2 yard
line.
2ND QUARTER
.....After
another Vikings 3 and out near the end of the 1st quarter, Tony Thomas
took matters into his own hands by returning the Viking punt 47 yards
for a TD - but 40 of those yard were nullified by a holding penalty.
A 21 yard run by Tristan Gray, followed by a personal foul on the Vikings,
moved the ball down to the Vikings 12. Two plays later LB Tony Heard
stepped in front of a Colt receiver at the 9 and returned the ball 49
yards to the Colts 42. A penalty on the return moved the ball back to
the Vikings 42.
.....The Viking offense finally awakened
with QB Hal Bisnett connecting with WR Patrick Sullivan for 22 yards
to give the Vikings their first 1st down of the game with just under
13 minutes left in the half. Marquise Moses added two catches and a
run for 19 more yards as the Vikings moved 43 yards in 8 plays to set
up Nick Terrel's 35 yard field goal midway through the 2nd quarter.
.....A 30 yard kick return by Nick Hamilton
set up the Colt offense at their own 41 but they still could not overcome
the Viking defense. Jacob Irwin and Tony Heard both combined for back
to back stops on Tristan Gray that netted -1 yards. Reynolds 3rd down
pass one hopped to the intended receiver and the Colts were forced to
punt.
.....Anthony
Henderson fielded the punt at the 26 and was immediately hit by the
Colts gunner, but was able to stay on his feet and power his way out
of the tackle. He returned the ball 52 yards down the right sideline
to the Colts 22. A holding penalty negated the last 8 yards of the Henderson's
return, setting the Vikings up at the Colts 40. Back to back 2 yard
runs by Moses set up 3rd and 6 where Bisnett's hard count caused the
defense to jump. Moses pounded out 3 more yards to convert the 3rd and
1. A 9 yard pass to Moses followed by a 4 yard pass to Tyquise Anthony
gave the Vikings another first down at the Viking 15. The Vikings struck
immediately with Bisnett throwing a bullet to Patrick Sullivan on 1st
down. The Vikings failed to convert the PAT due to a bad snap, but still
went into halftime with a 9-0 lead.
3RD
QUARTER
.....The
Vikings opened the 2nd half with an 11 yard holding penalty. Back to
back runs by Moses netted 13 yards bringing up 3rd and 8. NT #6 batted
down Bisnett's pass. Punt returner Tony Thomas went to work again, this
time returning the Viking punt 34 yards to the Viking 33. His blockers
let him down once again with a penalty that nullified all but 11 yards.
With the Vikings top 4 cornerbacks out of the game with injuries, new
Colt QB Mitch Johnson went to work. Despite being leveled by LB Tom
Fischer on his first pass attempt, he bounced back to hit Ryan Reynolds
on a middle screen that went for 45 yards down to the Viking 21 on his
next pass. Then he rolled left to avoid pressure from JJ Quinlan and
Brandon Wells and hit Pierre Gale for 20 more yards down to the 1. Tristan
Gray followed fullback Damien Coaxum through the Viking line and went
into the endzone standing up to put the Colts on the board. Johnson
connected with TE Garrett Cayson over the middle to pull the Colts to
within 1 with 11:28 remaining in the 3rd quarter.
.....A
Colts personal foul on the ensuing kickoff set up the Vikings at their
own 43. Back to back 8 yard runs by Moses gave the Vikings a first down
at the Colts 41. Under heavy pressure from DT Greg Reynolds, Bisnett
heaved the ball downfield to Paul Won. Won adjusted to the ball and
made a great catch while falling backwards. Both feet indisputably landed
in bounds before he fell out of bounds at the 6. The side judge ruled
the pass incomplete but did not signal why as Won appeared to control
the ball throughout the catch. Despite the apparent blown call, the
Vikings went on a 9 play drive that only netted 20 yards before facing
4th and 17 from the Colts 37. They lined up to go for it but QB Bisnett
punted out of shotgun formation and the was downed at the Colts 2 yard
line.
.....Two
incomplete passes and a penalty had the Colts facing 3rd and 11 from
their own 1. QB James Stafford make his first appearance of the game.
He eluded the Viking pass rush and found Ryan Reynolds open in the flat
at the 8 yard line. Reynolds was immediately wrapped up by Dwayne Spruel
but powered through Spruel's tackle and drug him 4 more yards, just
enough for a first down. Johnson came back into the game and connected
with Reynolds for 12 yards, and then with TE Nick Creger for 10 more.
On 1st and 15 from the 32, Johnson dropped back and heaved a bomb to
Anthony Montgomery running behind the Vikings' depleted secondary. Montgomery
caught the ball in stride at the 34 and outraced the defense to the
endzone. Ryan Reynolds tried going up the middle for the two-point conversion
but was stuffed by Rich Kim-Lee. With 2:08 left in the 3rd quarter,
the Colts had their first lead of the game, 14-9.
.....Starting
at their own 28, the Viking offense began to sputter. Moses was stopped
by LB Gary Reynolds for no gain on 1st down. A short pass that would
have only netted two yards fell incomplete. On 3rd and 10, a pass from
Bisnett to Moses only went for 6 yards before being stopped by Calvin
Schmidtke and Brandon Williams.
4TH
QUARTER
.....The
Vikings punted from their own 34 on the opening play of the 4th quarter.
Colt return man Tony Thomas fielded the punt at his own 31, bounced
off a big hit from Markiese Smith, and then went untouched across the
field and down the right sideline for a 69 yard touchdown. Once again,
most of the return, 67 yards this time, was nullified by a holding penalty.
QB James Stafford came back into the game, and on 1st down from the
Colt 23, he rolled right, avoided DE Louis Newsom, and heaved a bomb
to Carl Sundquist all alone behind the Vikings makeshift secondary at
the 38. Sundquist hauled in the pass and went untouched into the endzone
to give the Colts a 20-9 lead. This time it was Tay Burthaler and Brandon
Wells stopping Ryan Reynolds on the two-point conversion attempt.
.....The
Vikings next drive stalled at their own 44 when a 4th down pass went
incomplete. On the Colts first play, QB Mitch Johnson rolled left and
threw down the right sideline to a wide open Montgomery, who was able
to catch the ball despite being on the ground. The play went for 31
yards down to the Viking 13. On the next play, pressure from Burthaler
forced a bad pass that was intercepted by WR Jimi McCollum. McCollum
was playing defense because the Vikings had run out of defensive backs.
McCollum returned the ball 15 yards out to the 19.
.....Marquise
Moses came up a yard short on 3rd and 3, but a Colt personal foul gave
the Vikings a first down and 15 more yards. The Viking drive ended on
the next play as CB Ricky Satterwhite stepped in front of a Viking pass
at the Colt 35, where he was ruled down by contact.
.....Burthaler
sacked Stafford for a 3 yard loss on 1st down, but Stafford, despite
fumbling the snap, bounced back and eluded the Viking pass rush long
enough to hit Pierre Hale for 19 yards on 2nd.
Stafford connected with Mitch Johnson on the next play, and Johnson
immediately lateraled to Ryan Reynolds who went for a 14 yard gain.
However, Johnson was now playing offensive tackle and was ineligible.
The play resulted in a 5 yard penalty and loss of down. Stafford connected
with Montgomery for 14 yards to bring up 4th and 1. The Viking pass
rush bounced Stafford around like a pinball before Jordan Willis got
hold of him. Mike Seekins pulled the ball out and it was recovered by
JJ Quinlan.
.....The
turnover set up the Viking offense at their own 42 with 6:12 remaining.
On first down Bisnett went over the top to Paul Won who was running
open behind the Colt defense. The ball was slightly underthrown allowing
CB Chris Hamilton to catch up to Won and bring him down at the Colt
15. Three plays later Bisnett dropped back and then started to run up
the middle before pulling up and finding Tyquise Anthony alone in the
back of the endzone with 3:43 remaining. The two-point conversion pass
was dropped.
.....Ricky
Satterwhite returned the Viking kickoff 46 yards to the Viking 49, but
a holding penalty pushed the Colts back to their 12. The Colts opened
with a toss sweep to Ryan Reynolds but the play was stuffed for a 5
yard loss by most of the Viking defense. After the Vikings gave back
the 5 yards by being drawn offsides, Stafford hit Thomas on a flanker
screen. Thomas cut across the field behind his blockers and up the left
sideline out to the 46. Runs of 9 yards by Coaxum and 10 yards by Gray
were all the Colts needed to run out the clock.
.....For
those keeping track, Thomas had 130 punt return yards and 2 TDs negated
due to penalties. The Colts scored on both drives following the negated
touchdowns so the penalties didn't effect the outcome of the game, just
Thomas' personal stats. Satterwhite lost also 29 yards on a kickoff return
due to a penalty.
